To be, Eden
This intricate colored pencil and watercolor piece, titled To Be, Eden, is a luminous vision of paradise reimagined—created as preparatory artwork for the retreat center in Costa Rica's Diamante Valley, a place dedicated to dark retreats that invite profound renewal of perception and nervous system sensitivity.
The composition unfolds like a living mandala of emergence and harmony: at the crown blooms a radiant purple hibiscus flower, its petals open wide in delicate watercolor gradients, symbolizing divine feminine power, passion, emotional depth, and the sacred beauty of transformation. Perched upon it and fluttering nearby are butterflies in blues and greens—classic emblems of metamorphosis, rebirth, and the soul's journey from cocoon to flight, reminding us that change carries profound beauty and liberation.
Below, three serpents—pink, green, and another in subtle stripes—rise entwined around the branches of a vast, nurturing tree, their bodies forming a protective, womb-like enclosure. Far from mere temptation, these serpents evoke the Kundalini energy: the coiled, dormant spiritual force at the base of the spine that, when awakened, ascends to bring enlightenment, renewal, and union of opposites. Here they guard and cradle a glowing golden sun (or perhaps the Tree of Life's fruit), set against a serene blue watery base where faint hints of marine life—like a whale's tail—suggest depths of the unconscious and the flow of primal creation.
The lower realm bursts with verdant life: tangled roots cradle a miniature ecosystem of ferns, flowers, deer, birds, and tiny creatures amid mossy greens and earthy tones. This dense, interwoven undergrowth speaks to interconnectedness, the thriving web of existence where innocence and wild vitality coexist in perfect balance.
Created through a layered process—initial pencil drawing sharpened digitally, printed as clean outlines, then brought to life with watercolor pencils—the piece achieves a soft yet vivid luminosity. The technique mirrors the retreat's intention: starting with structured form, then infusing fluid, sensitive color to evoke inner awakening and heightened awareness.
In drawing this work, I sought to capture an Eden not lost but ever-present within—an inner garden of potential where one can return to innocence, awaken latent energies, and emerge renewed. The serpents protect rather than deceive; the butterflies affirm that transformation is graceful; the hibiscus opens in celebration of life's passionate unfolding. It invites viewers to step into their own paradise: a state of being where sight is restored, sensitivity deepened, and harmony reclaimed.
This high-quality fine art print faithfully reproduces the original's delicate blending, subtle textures, and glowing colors. Printed on premium archival paper with fade-resistant inks, it preserves the piece's ethereal depth and intricate details.
For those drawn to spiritual ecology, Kundalini awakening, shamanic journeys, nature mysticism, or spaces of deep retreat and inner renewal, To Be, Eden serves as a gentle portal: a reminder that paradise is not a distant memory, but a living possibility waiting to bloom within.
